April 10 Group Ride

Hey Everyone,

FYI: I am posting this in the Just For Fun, in case anyone wants to do the short loop, and in the RAINRIDE, in case anyone is interested in the base miles.

Sorry about the late notice on the ride this Saturday! It’s been a crazy week. Anyway, this week I am planning a 50 mile ride. However, we are breaking it into a 15 mile ride followed by a 35 mile ride. We are also going to try something a little different this week: On the 15 mile ride we will keep the pace under 15 mph and stay together as a loose group. The second loop of 35 miles will have no speed limit. The idea here is to give people a chance to get out and ride on Saturdays, but also give the people who really want to get out and hammer a chance to do that as well. And, the easier pace on the first 15 miles will be a nice warm-up for anyone wanting to do the remaining 35 miles.

Just to be clear, anyone is welcome to ride in either segment of the ride, but after the first 15 miles, we will pick the pace up quite a bit.

Also, this is the last week that I will be posting the route on www.jeremiahotis.com. If you are looking for it there, browse over to brokenspokescycling.com and sign up for an account (it’s free!). You will want to join the “Fast and Furious” group in order to stay informed about these rides. The emails will continue for another week, but after that, the only updates will come from brokenspokescycling.com.

Now, concerning this week’s ride…

The first loop will be a familiar ride…we will head down CR 28 to Corunna and then back up SR 6 to Waterloo. However, we will turn North onto CR 24, just after the UPS center, and head up to CR 35 to come back to Waterloo. Anyone who would like to finish the ride at that point can head back to New Hope, everyone else will head East on SR 6 towards Butler.

I will let you look at the map for the info on the remaining portion of the ride, because, frankly, I don’t feel like typing it all out when there is a map…just call me lazy! :)

I will see everyone at 9:30 AM on Saturday at New Hope! Remember, we are leaving at 9:45 AM with whoever is there, so don’t be late!

April 3 Group Ride

Hey Everyone!

First things first: I will be moving all updates regarding the Saturday rides to a new website, www.brokenspokescycling.com. All information regarding these Saturday rides will be available in the “Fast and Furious” group. So, swing on over to the new website and take a look! I will be posting the ride next week to this website, but after that, all info will be posted on brokenspokescycling.com.

Now, hasn’t this weather been wonderful!?! We got a ride in Monday night, and we are planning a ride on Thursday night (6PM on the courthouse lawn in Auburn if you’re interested), and we’ve got the ride this Saturday!

Last Saturday was terribly cold. It was just Ken and I, and we finally decided we were freezing to death, so we cut the ride short and went home. We got around 15-20 miles in, instead of the 35-40 we were planning on, but that’s ok…I’d rather not have frostbitten fingers and toes any day!

We will be following the same basic route that was planned for last Saturday this weekend. We will start at New Hope, head East on CR 28 to the Co-Op, and then North, working our way up to CR 16, then we will work our way over to CR 35 and back to New Hope. At that point, anyone who wants to stop can stop. We will continue South on CR 35 to CR 34, head East to CR 39 and then North to CR 40A, then West back to CR 35. We will take CR 35 North to Old Brick Road and then work our way back North through Auburn, and then back to New Hope.

Total ride is just over 29 miles, and both loops are right at 15 miles each. It should be a nice, fun ride, and hopefully we will have some nice weather!

I will be at New Hope at 9:30 AM, and will leave at 9:45 AM with whoever is there.

Hope to see you then!

March 27 Group Ride

Hey Everyone!

Well, we finally had a successful group ride last Saturday. It was windy and a little brisk, but it was dry. It was a good ride. There were seven of us, and we had a good time. We had two newcomers, who stuck it out in spite of the cold and the wind. So, if any of you run into Michelle or Daniel, make sure you congratulate and encourage them! That took quite a bit of guts! Good job, guys! :)

If you want to ride this week, it should be nice and sunny, and the high will be in the 50′s; however, it could be brisk in the morning, so you might want to wear a light jacket that you can shed easily, or unzip, if you start to get warm. Also, don’t forget water! And, I will have some bananas with me if anyone wants one, but it would be a good idea to eat breakfast about an hour before you ride, be wary of greasy breakfast food.

Like usual, I will be at New Hope in Waterloo at 9:30AM and will leave at 9:45AM. If you are interested in riding, just be in the parking lot by 9:45.

Now, onto planning this week’s ride: We are doing two loops again, both approximately 15 miles. We will not be taking a break between loops. If you don’t want to do the second half simply peel off when we pass New Hope. (However, if anyone needs to stop and take a breather during the ride, we will.)

The first loop will take us down CR 28, then north on CR 47 (at the Co-Op). When we get to the T at CR 22, we will go right on CR 49, take it up to 427, head right on 427 until we get to CR 10. Then we will go left, and head to CR 35 and take that back to the church.

The second loop will take us down CR 35, then left on CR 34. We will take a right at CR 39, and head on up to CR 40A. Turn right, go over to CR 35 and turn left. We will make a right on CR 46A (Old Brick Road) and head into Auburn. We will take Center St to 7th St, then turn right on Main St. We will head to the edge of town and take a right on Morningstar Road (CR 40, where the Golf Course is). We will take that back to CR 35 and then head back to the church for a total of 33 miles.

Hope to see you there!

Group Ride March 20

Hey Everyone!

It’s warming up!

Here is the ride map for this coming weekend. I know that it looks like a pretty long ride, but I have set it up so that we come back through Waterloo at the midpoint. We’ve got some riders looking forward to the longer ride, and some others who will be riding for the first time of the season, thus the loop back through Waterloo.

The first half is familiar territory: CR 28 to 327 to 6, and back to Waterloo. The second half starts when we get to CR 35…those continuing on to the second half will go North on CR 35, while anyone ready to stop can head back to New Hope. We will head up to CR 00 (the county line) and then over to Old 27 and back to New Hope.

I will be at New Hope at 9:30, and will leave at 9:45 with whoever shows up. Hope to see you there!

March 13 Group Ride Review!

“We’re still going, right?”

This is the text message I got at 8:06 this morning…a new rider (as in, hasn’t ridden a bike since he was in Jr High School!), Caleb, joined me for the ride this morning, and he was so excited about riding, that he didn’t want the weather to stop us!

He showed up at my house at 9, and we started riding to New Hope. The very first thing either of us noticed was the ridiculous wind…it was insane! The entire ride to New Hope was a constant battle with freezing cold gusts of very wet wind. I knew this was probably going to be a small group of riders.

We got to New Hope, and waited until 9:45, and no one showed up. So, we went ahead and started the official ride. We modified it, since it was Caleb’s first ride, and rode to the Co-Op and back, instead of to Corunna. We fought a major headwind the entire way to the Co-Op, but then we got on CR 28 and started heading back to Waterloo, and it felt like someone was pushing us the whole way.

As we were coming back into Waterloo, we saw a cyclist making slow weaving loops in a parking lot ahead of us…as we got closer, he waved. It turned out to be Tim, a cyclist of more than 20 years, but a first timer riding with us. I was extremely excited to see him! We have been trying to match schedules for more than a year to ride together. Caleb said he was doing OK, so we decided to go ahead and ride on to Corunna, figuring that we could always peel off and head back to Auburn if we needed to.

We got to Corunna in record time! We had quite the tail wind. But, once we got back out and SR 6 and started heading into the wind, we really slowed down. As a matter of fact, about half way back to Waterloo, I had to stop and take a break. At the time, I thought that I was experiencing a slight asthma attack. But, I realized later, after I got home, that the issue was more likely that I got to cold, and as a result had trouble breathing. Basically, I mis-judged the temperature, and left a layer at home…thinking I didn’t need it. I learned a pretty serious lesson: It’s far better to shed a layer than it is to wish you had a layer to add! That’s a mistake I don’t plan on repeating anytime soon!

All in all, it was a good ride. Even with the freezing cold rain and the crazy wind, it really felt good to get out and ride with fellow cyclists.

I’m really looking forward to next week. See everyone then!

March 13 Group Ride

Hey Everyone!

I hope that you all had a great week. It’s time for a map for the ride this Saturday!

I am planning the exact same route that I did last week: CR 28 to 327 to SR 6, then back to New Hope. It’s about 14.5 miles, and we will probably be keeping a pace of about 13-16 miles per hour. It will be the first real ride of the season for a lot of people, so there’s no reason to push hard and overdo.

I will be at New Hope, in Waterloo, at 9:30 AM. I will leave at 9:45 AM with whoever is there, and we will ride.

Looking forward to it…hope to see you there!

March 6, Group Ride

Hey everyone!

So, now that the snow storm has passed, I’m really planning on riding this weekend! So, same plan as last week. CR 28 to 327 to 6 and back to New Hope.

I will be at the church at 10:30 to ride. But, I have to be back in Auburn by noon. My niece has a game from 9-10 in Waterloo, and my nephew plays at 1 in Auburn. So, I will be at New Hope at 10:30, and we should have more than enough time to do 15 miles, and me make to my nephew’s game. Next week I will get back to riding at 9:30.

It’s supposed to be in the low 40′s and sunny! It’s gonna be a GREAT ride! :) Hope to see you then!

Ramping Up…

Well, it’s that time of year again! It’s time to get out and start riding some longer rides, and get ready for the season. I know that the bike club won’t actually be meeting officially until after the time changes, but I am planning on riding on Saturday mornings again.

I went for a nice ride from Auburn to Butler and back again today, and it felt GREAT! It got me excited to be out on the road again.

It looks like we are going to have some decent weather this upcoming Saturday, the 27th, so I am going to go for a ride! Anyone is welcome to join me. I’m planning on being at New Hope at 9:45 AM, and we will hit the road no later than 10 AM.

Since it is probably the first time that almost everyone will be out on the road this season, I am only planning on a 15 mile ride. I’ll post a map later this week. But, I thought I’d let everyone know that it’s time to hit the pavement! :)

Hope to see you out there! :)
